Beef for breakfast? Absolutely. Start your day with a protein power punch. Fuel your body and fuel your day.
When you work in ranching, you need to fuel your body first thing in the morning as what happens during the day is always a question. All your best laid plans can - and will - be ruined.
Your plan is to have an easy day: simply check cows and come home.
Think again.
You'll go to catch your horse and it will be the one morning they aren't interested in grain. That will make catching them a marathon. When you finally get on the road, you'll realize you forgot something and you have to turn around. When you get to where you need to check cows, you'll tell yourself you don't need to close the gate behind you because there aren't any cows in sight and you'll only be a short time. You'll want to rope a few head, because it's supposed to be a fun day and you need some practice. You'll head three and get the ropes off easy, but on the one you say is the last, you'll lose your rope and spend an hour chasing around a calf to get your rope back.
You still haven't checked cows yet, so you make a loop. There's a hole in the fence, but it's not bad, so you makeshift a fix and tell yourself you'll bring fencing supplies next time.
You will ride back to the gate, only to find that 20 head are out and walking fast. Getting them in should be a piece of cake, but it never really is. After all that work, you get to the truck and crack open that pop you've been saving for the drive home. You take a sip and set it on the flat bed of the truck, but your overenthusiastic cow dog tips is over. On the drive home, it's almost dark and you are glad the day is almost over. Then your horse trailer gets a flat.
At least you ate a Sunnyside Steak Skillet for breakfast.
A cowboy never plans an "easy day."
